NTB— mucho respect on everything you do. You've become a staple. Anyway, I'm thinking about getting a cropped trench coat and I wanted to know if you had any recommendations at a few different price points (500 or less). I can do standard beige/tan, but I'm highly interested in navy. Your thoughts?
Depending on where you reside, the trench could be one of the most or least important items in your closet. That being said, if you’re “thinking about getting a cropped trench,” I must assume you’re not in a city like London or Seattle, because if you were, you simply would have already purchased one, long ago.
Let’s assume you are in a city like New York, then. On average, NYC gets about 3-4 inches of rain per month. I’m not a meteorologist, but it seems to me that it’s a safe assumption that each time it rains, accumulated precipitation is about 1/2 an inch. This means that it probably rains 6-8 times a month and 72-96 times a year. Now let’s reduce that by 1/3, seeing that if precipitation gathers any time between November and February, it will most likely be snow, not rain. This puts us at 49-64 days of rain in NYC.
What I’m getting at is that if you live in NYC, you’re not going to get crazy use out of your trench. And going with the P/U ratio, you should probably save your money for a different item and just cop something decent from Uniqlo or Woodbury Common.
In any event, if you are comfortable spending $500 on a trench, I just say you wait for Burberry’s sale and swipe their classic trench for about $700 (or less).
As per navy, while I have no problem with it per se, the classic beige/tan is timeless and way more handsome. Good luck.
